Sep. 15--CEDAR FALLS -- Team Cos. is planning a $10 million expansion of its data center in the Cedar Falls Industrial Park in anticipation of business growth.
Team executive Mark Kittrell made that statement as the company announced it broke ground this week on a new data center in Fitchburg, Wis., near Madison.
That facility, a $15 million project initially, is designed to accommodate the Chicago and Milwaukee markets. However, Kittrell said, "Cedar Falls is our headquarters. Kind of always has been and always will be," and there's more opportunity for growth here as well. "The good news for our company is we're expanding."
The contemplated Cedar Falls expansion would be about 15,000 square feet.
"It would basically double the facility we've got," which opened in October 2004, Kittrell said.
"Our facility in Cedar Falls is filled. That's the great news," Kittrell said. "But we have more Iowa companies that are looking for our services. So we never like to be in the position where we don't have anything to sell."
The expansion would house additional data storage space, a company headquarters and additional office space that could be marketed to prospective tenants. "We have talked to the city, we're working with the state and the (Greater Cedar Valley) Alliance," he said. Ground will be broken as soon as "the right tenant for the space" is found.
Team presently employs about 30 people in Cedar Falls and would figure to add another six to 10 management type positions with the expansion. Another 10 to 12 will work in Madison.
The Team data center in Cedar Falls serves as a computer data storage center, a secure location where companies can back up their computer data, and a network access point where Internet service providers connect with each other.
Among the companies making use of the data center are Bandag, one of Iowa's largest companies; a large number of banks; and some international companies.
Team Cos. is made up of Team Technologies, which operates the data center, and Team Properties, a property development company. Team has an existing office complex in the Industrial Park where about 200 people are employed. In addition to Team's data center, other facilities there are T8 Animation, Advanced Computer Engineering Solutions; and the Hawkeye Technology Access Center, a training facility of Hawkeye Community College.
Team broke ground on the new facility in Fitchburg along with CDW Berbee, an information technology and business solutions company. Berbee will be Team's anchor tenant in the new Wisconsin data center and will also occupy space in an adjacent 50,000-square-foot office building.
Greater Cedar Valley Alliance CEO Steve Dust said, "When companies grow their market in nearby states, they will most likely also grow here. In our age of regional economic development, we are all winners when a company like Team can do this."
