QLD:Marine experts hopeful for rescued whale

Marine experts have examined footage of two mother whales with their babies off eastern
Australia, and have ruled out one calf as the animal rescued from the Gold Coast yesterday.

A one-week old humpback was saved from Surfers Paradise beach and rescuers were hopeful
it would reunite with its mother.

Sea World director of marine sciences TREVOR LONG says there is also video of a female
whale near Tweed Heads in northern NSW which was acting in a different manner to other
whales in the area.

He says their fingers are crossed that it's the mother of their calf.

SOC:Spurs eye history

By Justin Davis

PARIS, Aug 15 AFP - Harry Redknapp will get the chance to mark another defining moment
in his long managerial career when he leads Tottenham into the Champions League for the
first time in the club's history on Tuesday.

Redknapp took over Spurs during last season and led them to an impressive fourth place
finish in the Premier League.

"At least I can always say to the grandchildren, 'We finished fourth one year when
I was at Tottenham, we got into the Champions League'," Redknapp said.

Now Redknapp, who has also managed Bournemouth, West Ham, Portsmouth (twice), and Southampton
in a 27-year career, must steer Spurs through a two-leg play-off against Swiss side Young
Boys, who host the first leg in Berne, in a bid to join the lucrative group stages.

Going on their performance in a goalless draw against Manchester City on Saturday,
when only City goalkeeper Joe Hart denied Spurs a win, Redknapp's task looks to be achievable.

Young Boys were ousted 5-2 on aggregate by Red Star Belgrade in the 2004/2005 edition's
second qualifying round, and were beaten 5-1 by Real Madrid in the old European Cup first
round in 1986/87.

Tuesday's tie, and more so the return leg next week, will have special significance
for Young Boys defender Scott Sutter, who grew up in London and used to have a season
ticket for White Hart Lane.

"It was amazing for me when I was watching the draw with my dad and the first two names
out were us and Tottenham," Sutter told www.uefa.com.

"I jumped up and punched the air. The club I support and once had a season ticket;
I can finally play at White Hart Lane. It couldn't get any better."

With 10 group place spots up for grabs over Tuesday and Wednesday's ties, Spurs won't
be alone in bidding for a place in the group phase.

Also in action on Tuesday will be Ajax, Norwegian hopefuls Rosenborg, Czech side Sparta
Prague, and 2008 UEFA Cup winners Zenit-St Petersburg.

Former European champions Ajax face Dynamo Kiev, who, with Andriy Shevchenko on board,
are bidding for their fifth group stage campaign in a row.

Shevchenko has direct experience of Ajax, having twice scored a game-winning goal against
the Dutch league runners-up when he played for AC Milan.

Norwegian champions Rosenborg host Danish counterparts Copenhagen as both sides bid
to join the group stages after several years away.

Sparta Prague have qualified for the group stages seven times but are looking to return
for the first time since 2005 having fallen at the last qualifying hurdle the past three
seasons.

They host MSK Zilina from Slovakia.

Zenit are the only unbeaten team after 16 games in the Russian league but manager Luciano
Spalletti has urged caution against an Auxerre side which finished third in the French
league last season.

"We need to keep ourselves concentrated throughout the match," said Spalletti, who
will be missing Croatian defender Ivica Krizanac through injury.

"Auxerre are very serious opponents and if we want to win we will need to be on top form."

Qld: Nine-year sentence for man who killed girlfriend

By Kym Agius

BRISBANE, April 7 AAP - A man killed his girlfriend just a month after a magistrate
imposing a domestic violence order warned his alcohol abuse would lead to trouble, a court
has been told.

Zanen Jordan, 32, was sentenced in the Supreme Court in Brisbane on Tuesday to nine
years' jail after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of Danee Louise Morrison, 34, at
their Stafford home, in Brisbane's north, in September 2008.

Ms Morrison's body was found on September 8, with more than 20 bruises to her body,
marks around her neck, and up to eight blows to her head.

Jordan also had scratches and bruises.

The court was told the couple fought after Jordan returned home from a drinking session
that had lasted several hours.

The coroner's report found Ms Morrison could have died a number of ways, including
from strangulation, head injuries, or heart attack.

Ms Morrison and Jordan had not been aware of her pre-existing heart condition.

Jordan's defence barrister Andrew Boe called on Justice James Douglas to take into
account the heart condition during sentencing.

He also told the court the killing was not premeditated, saying a fight had got out of control.

"He came home drunk and angry, and he violently assaulted her. It was a short episode,
he sustained injuries. There was no intention to do serious harm," Mr Boe told the court.

Jordan was originally charged with murder, but the Crown accepted a plea of manslaughter
in February 2010.

The couple was known to police before the killing.

Officers had been called to the house twice in the months leading up to Ms Morrison's
death, but she never filed a complaint.

Police took matters into their own hands and sought a domestic violence order, which
was granted by a magistrate only a month before Ms Morrison's death.

During sentencing on Tuesday, Justice Douglas said the magistrate had warned Jordan
about problems associated with alcohol abuse, and offered advice on how to address the
issue.

"It should have been a wake-up call ... but it is very unfortunate that it was not,"

Justice Douglas said.

"This is a tragic result of a lifestyle associated with the abuse of alcohol and a
willingness to engage in violence ... apparently from both sides.

"It just can't be permitted that men attack women in a fashion like this, even if there
is a history of mutual violence.

"It is just completely unacceptable behaviour."

Jordan will be eligible for parole in three years.

A Holden Monaro left the road and collided with a power poll on Catherine Field Road,

Camden police used Polair and the Dog Squad to search the rural area but the man could
not be found.

Fed: Gov't to provide millions more to keep open ABC centres=4

Ms Gillard told reporters in Melbourne about 100 employees at the 55 centres that will
close will be made redundant.

She said the government was working to ensure they received all their entitlements
and understood employees were under a "great deal of stress and strain in the lead-up
to Christmas".

The government would make an announcement on their entitlements "shortly", she said.

Ms Gillard said while the 241 centres had been labelled unviable under the ABC Learning
business plan there was no reason the centres could not work under other owners.

"We are providing the assistance until March 31st to give us time to work with the
241 centres and we will be making arrangements as soon as we can about the future of these
centres," she said.

Many expressions of interest in the centres have been received from not for profit
groups and local governments.

Ms Gillard did not rule out small private providers running the business in the future.

But she blamed the former government for "letting the market rip".

"Here we are with the biggest provider of for profit childcare organisations in the
country moving firstly into voluntary administration then into receivership affecting
more than 1,000 centres so it's a big mess."

She said the government had worked hard to sort out the situation and ensure continuity
of care for children and provide reassurance for parents.

Ms Gillard ruled out the federal government outright buying and running the remaining centres.

Tas: Minister admits affair, depression

HOBART, Aug 6 AAP - Tasmanian MP Paula Wriedt has admitted she had an affair with her
government driver and is suffering depression.

Ms Wriedt was rushed to hospital on Monday after attempting suicide amid speculation
she had succumbed to pressures following the break-up of her marriage.

In her first statement since the incident, Ms Wriedt today said she had an affair with
"a government employee."

"The relationship was consensual and it ended earlier this year after a period of some
months," the Minister for Economic Development and Tourism said in the statement.

"I take responsibility for my being involved in this relationship and I regret the
hurt caused to anyone, including my family.

"I feel this statement is warranted to put the facts in context given the media interest.

"I have medical advice that I am suffering from depression and have been for some time."

After it had been reported the separated mother of two had an affair with her driver,
Premier David Bartlett confirmed today the driver was taking legal action against the
government.

The action is reportedly a bid for an ex-gratia payment of $100,000.

Mr Bartlett denied reports it was a sexual harassment claim against Ms Wriedt.

He told ABC Radio the legal issue had been referred to the Solicitor-General and was
being dealt with by the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

"When that process is completed the department will advise me and I will advise the
Tasmanian public," Mr Bartlett said.

He told the ABC Ms Wriedt had offered to resign.

"But I want to make it clear that I had not accepted or recommended her resignation
up and to the point that I spoke to her last which was on Sunday evening," he said.

Ms Wriedt, 39, is expected to remain in Royal Hobart Hospital for at least another
day, a hospital spokeswoman said.

When asked how Ms Wriedt was holding up, the spokeswoman said: "She's good, she's good".

Her family yesterday said her recovery will be a long process but she has great support
from family and friends.

atmos.

atmos., atmosphere pressure The characteristic level of atmospheric pressure at Earth's surface, most particularly the standard atmosphere, now taken to be 101.325 kPa. The distinct technical atmosphere = 1 kgf·cm2 = 98.0665 kPa, the figure being from the original standard gravity.

Atmospheric pressure declines with increasing altitude (and ever more rapidly) because of the thinning of the atmosphere and the declining gravitational acceleration. The decline is significant even over the altitude range of major human habitation, exceeding 10% at 1 000 m (3 200.∼ ft) – below the altitude of Denver, Mexico City, Nairobi, and many other cities. Weather maps and reports give values adjusted to implied sea level values (and aneroid barometers must be adjusted accordingly to the site).

While the specific pressure at any altitude depends on current atmospheric conditions, just as it does at ground level, the routine progressive change with altitude allows for measurement of altitude by measurement of pressure. Long advantageous in mountain climbing, this is of great relevance now in flying; the standard settings for aircraft altimeters are shown in Table 3.

Barbara Bompani and Maria Frahm-Arp. Development and Politics from Below: Exploring Religious Spaces in the African State.(Book review)

Barbara Bompani and Maria Frahm-Arp. Development and Politics from Below: Exploring Religious Spaces in the African State. New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2010. xiii, 257pp.

Religion in Africa plays a central role in every aspect of people's lives. Using Western benchmarks to study African religious experiences has often produced results that do not do justice to the African experience. The book's contributors seek to answer how different the African religious experience is and how it interplays with politics and development to impact various societies. The focus is on ordinary people who through religion have become agents of positive transformations, which recognized political structures seem to have failed. Professors from diverse disciplines in Europe, United States of America, and Africa shared their thoughts and research on religion, politics, and developmental issues in a 2008 conference with a title similar to that of the book.

The ten chapters are divided into three sections. In Part I, "Challenging the Secular: Religion and Public Spaces," Stephen Ellis is convinced that African states do not share Western concepts of separation between religion and state. Spiritual thoughts supersede the physical. Thus in a real sense, when African religious beliefs are placed beside the West's, the modernity principles that leave out religious roles do not work for Africa. Gerrie ter Haar uses Emmanuel Milingo, the Catholic Archbishop of Lusaka, as a case study to show how religion (Christianity) extract self-help programs to generate change in food production through the Mubliuli Economic Principle. Ter Haars seeks human dignity through self-improvement. Abdulkader Tayob also looks at dignity in religious traditions, spaces, and identities in South Africa by examining the kramat burial sites for Muslim saints. Dorothea Schulz accesses Muslim women of Bamako, Mali, and how foreign donors have helped to transformed them over the years. The underlining argument in this chapter is that change through religious activism emanates from self-recognition and mutual group support that does not require an 'other' to dictate the principles and pace.

Part II, "Religion between State and Society," reflects on the carved space of religion that exists between the state and the society and the relationship that accrues from this. Skinner surveys this religious space in Gambia, Ghana, and Sierra Leone in looking at the tremendous growth Islam has attained in exerting its influence into the social (education and health), political and economic public spaces, locally and internationally, thereby becoming more open to secular developments. Ernest Mallya continues with a study of the relationship between faith-based organizations (FBOs), NGOs, and the government in Tanzania and concludes that religious groups are at the mercy of the government, which is appropriating the resources of the FBOs and NGOs. Linda van de Kamp evaluates the Universal Church of Christ in Mozambique to expose the negativity in some religious activities. This church encourages its members to give money to the church, reminiscent of the early Catholic Church selling indulgences. The result is the continual poverty of the congregation while the "men of God" become rich. The emphasis of these chapters is on the religious groups filling the vacuum created by political institutions and helping to foster a new process of advancement for the people. In addition, they espouse that religious activism does sometimes have negative implications even though the intention may be noble.

In Part III, "Health Care Provision: Reflections on Religion," James Cochrane offers a theoretical framework for the study of religions to arrive at a public acceptance of the relationship between religion and politics. Elizabeth Graveling uses the village of Ndwumizili to elaborate on how people alternate between different religions to achieve life's satisfaction, while Ezra Chitando assesses how the World Council of Churches is dealing with the HIV epidemic in Africa.

The selection of papers in this book all speak to the relationship between religion and development that most Western countries downplay. The contributors have all shown that religion can help bring about development and societal cohesion in instances where politics fail. Using salient information gleaned from books, journal articles, radio broadcasts, interviews, and internet sources, the authors in one voice reiterate the ordinary people's effort at effecting change in their society. The synthesis of all the papers have successfully interrogated and reflected on "the significance of the kinds of public action that manifest themselves in nonWestern societies" (p. 3). This is an important contribution for policy makers, development agencies, and religious groups to acquaint themselves with formulating policies that will be beneficial to the people they are serving.

"People across Pennsylvania are increasingly relying on smartphones and 3G applications to manage their busy lives and stay connected at home or on-the-go," said Mark Frazier, president-Ohio/Pennsylvania/West Virginia Region, Verizon Wireless. "The more than $1.3 billion we've invested into our Pennsylvania network has kept us ahead of consumer trends, provided our customers a 3G advantage and underscored our belief that any mobile device is only as good as the network it runs on. Proactive and sustained investment has made Verizon Wireless the 3G leader in Pennsylvania and nationwide."

Harnessing the Capabilities of a Robust 3G Network Verizon Wireless' 3G network powers many leading mobile multimedia services, including:

* Mobile Broadband Internet Access: Notebook computer users can access e-mail, download files and browse the Internet at broadband speed, downloading a one megabyte e-mail attachment - the equivalent of a small PowerPoint presentation or a large PDF file - in about eight seconds and uploading it in less than 13 seconds.

* V CAST Video: V CAST multimedia services offer customers the ability to play cutting-edge 3D games and stream video clips straight to their phones, as well as to watch dozens of on-demand videos, including breaking news, weather, sports highlights and entertainment clips.

In addition to enhancing its 3G network, Verizon Wireless has deployed its 4G LTE Network in 74 metropolitan areas and 76 commercial airports coast to coast covering one-third of all Americans. During 2011, the company will continue to expand its 4G footprint to include more than 175 markets by year-end. Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE wireless network is the fastest and most advanced 4G network in America and offers speeds up to 10 times faster than the current 3G network.

Sustained Wireless Investment The company has invested more than $65 billion - $6.0 billion on average every year - since its inception to increase the wireless voice and data coverage of its national network and to add new 3G services like Mobile Broadband and V CAST. As the carrier with America's largest and most reliable wireless network, Verizon Wireless cell sites in Pennsylvania provide 3G wireless data connectivity.

Engineering America's Most Reliable Wireless Network The company's 'America's most reliable wireless network' reputation is based on network studies performed by test men and test women throughout the country. By traversing more than one million miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways, as well as major roads and surface streets in high-population areas-the equivalent of two roundtrips to the moon or 40 trips around the world-the test men and women confirm that voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than 3.5 million voice call attempts and more than 19 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless' network and the networks of other carriers.

No silver lining.(Reprint)

This news was brought to you by www.7days.ae

Over the past year the price of silver has enjoyed a meteoric rise. In May 2010 you could have purchased an ounce of silver for just $13. Twelve months on it had risen to about $50 an ounce, doubling in price over the previous six months alone.

But last week provided yet another warning, as if one were needed, of the fate that awaits financial assets that rise too much, too soon.

Think about the price of internet stocks in the year 2000 or UAE property prices in 2007. Yes, we're talking about the popping of speculative bubbles. And it was the turn of silver to pop last week with the price falling by an eye-watering 27 per cent.

That's the biggest one-week loss since 1975, enough to wipe out the gains of the previous two months in just five trading sessions. And the fall in silver spilled over into other commodity markets.

The Standard & Poor's GSCI Index of 24 commodities finished the week down by 11 per cent. All in all, it wasn't a good week for commodities.

But as you might expect, following these declines many analysts are now predicting a recovery in commodity prices. Others, however, are viewing the silver crash as a warning, a canary down the coalmine, so to speak. They believe the fall in silver foreshadows something more worrying: the end of the commodity bull market.

University Center growing.(News)

Byline: Mike Riopell State Government Writer mriopell@dailyherald.com -CLMN-

SPRINGFIELD -- As state universities across Illinois have been forced to cut their budgets in recent years, the small Lake County facility that hosts some of their classes has been forced to be creative with its cash as well.

Since starting as executive director of the University Center of Lake County 10 years ago, Gary Grace's challenges have changed from trying to grow a new, relatively unique institution to now trying to keep it running well despite the state's budget challenges.

The center hosts 18 member universities that offer college-degree programs in Grayslake and Waukegan for people who -- because of their jobs or families -- can't leave the area or make the long commute to a university. Many of the programs are geared toward career development.

"We have a number of folks who are looking to retool and find alternate jobs with a different skill set," he said.

Students pay tuition to the schools, such as Northern Illinois University, that offer the classes via adjunct teachers they've hired, the Internet or even faculty who make the trip to Lake County to teach. The state funds the University Center itself.

But like anyone depending on state funding lately, the center has faced budget challenges in recent years.

So just as the University Center was expanding and looking to enhance its programs, the state took a chunk out of its budget. Its state help was cut nearly in half from $2.9 million a year to $1.7 million. This fiscal year, Grace said, it has received none of the state money that has been owed since July. Despite that, the University Center could add a 19th member soon. And enrollment, at nearly 2,000 students, has never been higher.

Some of the member universities want to expand, too. Southern Illinois University is the member school farthest from the Grayslake campus but has the biggest presence there. Vice President of Academic Affairs Paul Sarvela says part of SIU's goal is to serve students unable to attend a typical university.

For that reason, and the fact that Lake County and the suburbs continue to grow, SIU wants to expand its offerings at the University Center, Sarvela said

And, Sarvela said, the Lake County facility's budget issues are similar to what a typical state school is going through. Everyone depending on state money has to wait a long time for it to come.

"A lot of budgeting is dealing with the unknown," Sarvela said.

Lawmakers' budget talks in Springfield will heat up next month. Sen. Terry Link, a Waukegan Democrat, said he doesn't think the center will take another big budget hit. But, he says, officials might have to get creative to find the money. Link said he thinks the center is important for the region, but it has to scrap for cash because it doesn't have the stature of a state university.

The center has been able to supplement its budget with savings, as well as earnings from local businesses or school districts that want to have meetings in its large Grayslake facility. But schools and companies have seen their budgets dry up, too.

In the meantime, like all schools and universities waiting for state money, Grace said the center just has to wait and see what lawmakers do. And their decisions might not become clear until the last minute.

Team to expand in C.F.

Byline: Pat Kinney

Sep. 15--CEDAR FALLS -- Team Cos. is planning a $10 million expansion of its data center in the Cedar Falls Industrial Park in anticipation of business growth.

Team executive Mark Kittrell made that statement as the company announced it broke ground this week on a new data center in Fitchburg, Wis., near Madison.

That facility, a $15 million project initially, is designed to accommodate the Chicago and Milwaukee markets. However, Kittrell said, "Cedar Falls is our headquarters. Kind of always has been and always will be," and there's more opportunity for growth here as well. "The good news for our company is we're expanding."

The contemplated Cedar Falls expansion would be about 15,000 square feet.

"It would basically double the facility we've got," which opened in October 2004, Kittrell said.

"Our facility in Cedar Falls is filled. That's the great news," Kittrell said. "But we have more Iowa companies that are looking for our services. So we never like to be in the position where we don't have anything to sell."

The expansion would house additional data storage space, a company headquarters and additional office space that could be marketed to prospective tenants. "We have talked to the city, we're working with the state and the (Greater Cedar Valley) Alliance," he said. Ground will be broken as soon as "the right tenant for the space" is found.

Team presently employs about 30 people in Cedar Falls and would figure to add another six to 10 management type positions with the expansion. Another 10 to 12 will work in Madison.

The Team data center in Cedar Falls serves as a computer data storage center, a secure location where companies can back up their computer data, and a network access point where Internet service providers connect with each other.

Among the companies making use of the data center are Bandag, one of Iowa's largest companies; a large number of banks; and some international companies.

Team Cos. is made up of Team Technologies, which operates the data center, and Team Properties, a property development company. Team has an existing office complex in the Industrial Park where about 200 people are employed. In addition to Team's data center, other facilities there are T8 Animation, Advanced Computer Engineering Solutions; and the Hawkeye Technology Access Center, a training facility of Hawkeye Community College.

Team broke ground on the new facility in Fitchburg along with CDW Berbee, an information technology and business solutions company. Berbee will be Team's anchor tenant in the new Wisconsin data center and will also occupy space in an adjacent 50,000-square-foot office building.

Greater Cedar Valley Alliance CEO Steve Dust said, "When companies grow their market in nearby states, they will most likely also grow here. In our age of regional economic development, we are all winners when a company like Team can do this."
