Qld: Why did Natasha Ryan hide herself away?

Experts say hideaway teenager NATASHA RYAN may have been the victim of intense psychologicalforces which made it hard for her to end nearly five years in seclusion.

Police found NATASHA last week, hiding in a cupboard at the home she's shared withher boyfriend in the central Queensland city of Rockhampton since disappearing in September1998.

The 18-year-old's family and police had believed she was a victim of an alleged serial killer.

Child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr LOUISE NEWMAN says the case reminds her of theso-called Stockholm Syndrome scenario where a person who's in a very isolated and intenserelationship with someone else finds it impossible to escape.

There's no suggestion NATASHA's 26-year-old boyfriend held her against her will ormistreated her, but psychologist BOB MONTGOMERY says the fact he's much older indicateshe may have had an emotional hold over her.

Both experts say it's important to understand why NATASHA ran away in the first place.
