him the job.

Governor Landy (Melbourne)
Victoria's new governor-elect, Olympian JOHN LANDY has described himself as a very
ordinary, private person.
Mr LANDY, a 1956 Olympian, says he and his wife LYNNE have spent several sleepless
nights before accepting the offer of the governorship from Premier STEVE BRACKS.
He's told reporters he was approached late last month by the Premier who yesterday
met with incumbent governor Sir JAMES GOBBO and declined to extend his term beyond December
31.
Mr LANDY, who's now aged 70, says the offer came as a huge surprise.
While he hasn't been heavily involved in public life, he describes himself as someone
who relates very easily to people.
Mr LANDY, who held several world track records and won a bronze medal in the 1500 metres
at the Melbourne Olympics, was one of a number of athletes who pursued the magical four-minute
mark for the distance during the 1950s.
