Fed: Human rights watchdog demands action at Christmas Island
Australia's human rights watchdog wants urgent action to improve the living conditions
of asylum seekers on Christmas Island after a check found inadequate facilities.
The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission says an inspection of Christmas Island's
Sports Hall and Phosphate Hill holding facility found detainees packed together in oppressively
humid conditions.
HREOC President ALICE TAY says the private security company in charge of the facilities,
Australasian Correctional Management, has also failed to inform the detainees of their
legal rights.
HREOC inspected the facilities on December 7 in response to complaints from concerned
island residents.
