SA: Hindmarsh bridge developers win defamation payout

The developers of the Hindmarsh Island bridge have been awarded a $166,300 payout for
a defamation claim against a local newspaper.

Bridge developers TOM and WENDY CHAPMAN have been awarded the payout over six articles
or letters published in the Victor Harbor Times between October 1993 and Sept 1997.

It's one of a long series of defamation claims the CHAPMANS are taking against media
organisations over coverage of their decision to build a bridge between Goolwa, 80km south-east
of Adelaide, and Hindmarsh Island.

District Court judge BARRIE KITCHEN found the paper defamed the CHAPMANS by reporting
comments that they had not consulted Aborigines before building the bridge.

Other passages made claims that the Environmental Impact Statement for the development
was not satisfactory and did not include the bridge.

There was also a letter to the editor published in which it was said the CHAPMANS were
greedy profiteers.
